Ritually Speaking

At a meeting held in December, a lively discussion took place regarding the appropriateness of applause in the sanctuary during services.

It has been our custom to show approval of something special, such as birthday blessings, by either applauding or waving our hands in the air.

No conclusion was reached, but we would appreciate members thinking about how they feel about this and sharing their thoughts with us. It will be brought up for discussion at a future date.

Charlotte Russell, Chair

Publicity Committee

The Publicity Committee, consisting of Ellyn Rothstein, Tamara Kerner and Toby Greenberg serving as Chair, met on December 1 for the purpose of setting guidelines for spreading the word on temple activities.

To be effective we appreciate your cooperation in following the procedures listed below:

Event and/or activity information require two months lead-time in order to be placed with newspapers, TV, PTBAS website, Bimah announcements, The Temple Voice and social media outlets. Event information including the name, date, time, place, price and respond dates are necessary. A form designed for this purpose will be made available for your convenience.

Flyers for distribution through mail, e-mail and placement in the social hall should be prepared and sent to the Publicity Committee for approval and release. Assistance in preparation of flyers is always available. We are more than happy to help.

The Publicity Committee will review and approve all flyers and/or information forms, and then forward on as required. In order to maintain consistency and accuracy in the information, please do not contact our publicity outlets on your own.

Send your proposed flyers and requests for media placement via e-mail to:

Toby -- larrytobygreen@aol.com

Ellyn -- redstone48@optonline.net

Tamara --shiridov@bellatlantic.net

Thanks in advance. Toby Greenberg Chair

Jewish Cultural Committee

As we begin the secular New Year, we have another opportunity to reinvigorate ourselves and plunge into the exciting cultural world around us. On Sunday, January 8, at 3:00 PM, we will attend a concert at the JCC in Manhattan on West 76 Street and Amsterdam Avenue featuring three female Russian Jewish cantors. This may be especially interesting to those of us living here in Brooklyn in close proximity to the Russian Jewish community who may not be acquainted with Russian Jewish musical traditions. The concert will be followed by a wine and dessert reception, and the ticket price is $30. Please contact me or Helene Smith if you wish to attend.

There has been a lot of interest in rescheduling the tour of Temple Emanuel and in visiting the exhibit on the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Discovery Center, and we hope to accommodate you.

In the mood for other interesting events in January? The 2012 Brooklyn Israel Film Festival will be held once again at the Kane Street Synagogue in Cobble Hill and will be showing “The Debt” on Thursday, January 26, at 8:00 PM, “Restoration” on Saturday, January 28, at 8:00 PM, and “Dolphin Boy” on Sunday, January 29. at 7:00 PM. You may also enjoy a staged reading of Chaim Potok’s “The Chosen” on Wednesday, January 25, at 7:00 PM at the Museum of Jewish Heritage at Battery Park.

Happy New Year!

Yvette Pomerantz, Chair
